Service area
The geographic area a Medicare Advantage plan is sold for — and outside which a person may not stay enrolled.
What it means
A Medicare Advantage plan is approved to serve named counties. A Part D drug plan is approved for a region rather than a county.
Moving to an address outside it is a named reason a person is no longer eligible to remain enrolled, and it opens a special election period.
It is not the same thing as the plan's network: a provider can be out of network at an address that is inside the service area.
Why it matters
It is the reason the health plan belongs in the decision about where to move rather than in the paperwork afterwards.
Families frequently discover it at the new pharmacy counter.
When you are likely to meet it
- When a parent moves, to another county or another state.
- When choosing between two places to move to.
