Qualifying hospital stay

The three consecutive inpatient days Medicare requires before it will pay for rehabilitation in a nursing facility.

What it means

Original Medicare covers skilled nursing care only after at least three consecutive calendar days hospitalized as an inpatient, not counting the day of discharge.

Time spent under observation is outpatient time and does not count, however many nights it lasted.

There is also a window on the other side: the person must need the care, be admitted and receive it within 30 calendar days of leaving the hospital, unless the care would not be medically appropriate that soon.

Why it matters

It is a frequent way the rehabilitation benefit is lost, and it is lost before anybody has mentioned rehabilitation.

A Monday admission and a Wednesday discharge is two qualifying days, not three.

When you are likely to meet it

  • At a discharge meeting where a nursing facility is being proposed.
  • At the rehab admissions desk, when the stay turns out not to qualify.
